Conversation and Community, now available as a free ebook!

Conversation and Community, now available as a free ebook!

I started writing the first edition of the book about social media ideas for technical writing projects in 2008 and published it with XML Press in 2009. We created a second edition in 2012 and as I look back, we could probably have done an edition every year with the pace of change in social media.

One fun image I found as I was looking back through files and drafts was this silly image I drew for the designer, Patrick Davison, as an idea for one of the chapters, taking about taking content round trip through a wiki.

Thankfully, the image turned out much better than my draft!

How to get the free ebook bundle

You can get the ebook bundle on the XML Press site by clicking Add to Cart, then Shopping Cart, and then Proceed to Checkout. You’ll get a link sent to your email where you can download ePub, Kindle (.mobi), or PDF.

Remix and reuse

You might be interested to know that the book is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Unported License, which is available at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/. In plain language, that license means that anyone can copy or adapt, and even distribute text from the book as long as the redistribution gives appropriate credit and does not charge for any adaptations created. This license choice means that people can reuse it in workshops, in classrooms, and even pull out parts of it for reuse in other works.

I would love to hear of any creative examples using this Creative Commons work, so please reach out with your great ideas. And thanks for all the support over the years of this book and the ideas behind it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about developer support at Cisco recently, especially for the way the world works today with multiple cloud providers. This post is a re-publish of my talk from over five years ago, but the techniques and tools for listening and helping others are still true today. At Rackspace, we watched several […]

Cisco DevNet is our developer program for outreach, education, and tools for developers at Cisco. From the beginning, the team has had a vision for how to run a developer program. Customers are first, and the team implements what Cisco customers need for automation, configuration, and deployment of our various offerings. Plus, the DevNet team […]

I had a great talk with Ellis Pratt of Cherryleaf Technical Writing consulting last week. Here are the show notes, full of links to all the topics we covered. Podcasts are great fun to listen to and participate in, if a bit nerve-wracking to think on your feet and make sure you answer questions succinctly […]

At the beginning of this year, I worked hard to summarize my thoughts on API documentation, continuous publishing, and technical accuracy for developer documentation. The result is an article on InfoQ.com, edited by Deepak Nadig, who also was forward-thinking in having me speak to a few teams at Intuit about API documentation coupled with code. Always […]
